Job Talk: Facility Coordinator Jetske Oterdoom

"Do you have a second? I need to show that driver where to go." It’s immediately clear: facility coordinator Jetske Oterdoom is on top of the operation. This busy multitasker and her team ensure that the bakery in Emmeloord runs smoothly. That means managing and organizing a huge variety of tasks: from cleaning silos and purchasing raw materials to arranging company clothing and a charging station for electric bikes. And everything in between.

The energetic Jetske has been working as a facility coordinator at Bakker Goedhart for almost a year now. She never imagined she would end up in a facility role within an industrial environment. “I used to scroll right past those kinds of jobs because the word ‘facility’ always made me think of a caretaker shuffling around in a lab coat. But my former manager said it might be a good fit for me, and the rest is history.” Because there’s no shuffling around in this bakery.

Many tasks, a lot of responsibility

Jetske and her team handle a wide range of tasks and carry a lot of responsibility. “Luckily, there are four of us!” There is also an external cleaning team. One moment she’s focused on cleaning, an hour later she’s organizing the warehouse or helping staff with new shoes. "We also manage the raw materials," she explains. "We handle both purchasing and inventory management. Even connecting IBCs—those 1000-liter containers for things like oil—is part of our team's job." The same goes for the annual cleaning of the silos. "It’s not easy to get them empty on time without causing downtime. And, of course, they need to be refilled on time, too. I manage things like that." On top of that, she is a prevention officer and will soon start training as a safety expert. Last summer, she even took over logistics for three weeks. Laughing, she adds: "I’m not someone who stands around with their hands in their pockets waiting for it to be four o'clock. So, I could handle that, too."

Learning and improving together

Improving things together is what gives Jetske energy. And she gets plenty of room to do that at Goedhart Emmeloord. For example, she discovered that electric bike batteries were being charged in the canteen and changing rooms. "That’s not okay; it’s dangerous, so I arranged for an outdoor charging locker. It’s an expensive piece of equipment, so I cleared it with the bakery manager first. But for daily things like hairnets and raw materials, I handle those myself." She also implemented improvements in storage: new shelving and a different layout. And she picked up some great ideas for cleaning from the Wateringen branch: "They do a great job there, so I went to see how they handle things. I want to take the best practices from every branch."

Fast-paced

Keeping all those balls in the air is hard work, but—perhaps because of that—she loves it. "No two days are the same, and that’s what makes it fun. I don't want to go to work and think: here we go again with the same routine." In short, Jetske is happy with her career change. And the bakery is happy with her. "The first day I thought: do I actually like all these machines? But I surprised myself. The fact that I received a permanent contract and opportunities for growth within a year makes me proud." And the future? "My ambition is to learn something new every day. Where that leads? We’ll see. There are still plenty of opportunities for me here."

The ideal role for natural organizers

Jetske has a clear message for women. "This job is about being sharp, keeping an eye on details and processes, being flexible, and organizing things well… I think many women are great at this, but they assume facility work isn't for them. That’s a shame, because it’s a fantastic job." The working hours are also attractive: "We work from 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM. And one Saturday a month, for cleaning checks, swabs, and counting raw materials." This means she can be home in the afternoon or with her horse, which is a huge advantage. And the fact that she can take home super-fresh corn bread from the bakery is another plus. "It’s delicious even without toppings."
